3 Beautiful Plates of Pennsylvanian Age
Fossil Seed Ferns

Genera: Alethopteris and Neuropteris
Central Pennsylvania
Pottsville Formation
Pennsylvanian Period
Approx. 310 million years ago

This auction features 3 cool plates of Pennsylvanian age seed fern fossils, approx. 310 million years old--far older than the oldest dinosaurs.See ruler in the photos for scale. (One photo shows the front of the plates; the other shows the reverse side. Winner gets all three plates). Plant fossils from this site are unique in the world in that the fossil remains are dramatic white to yellow/orange compressions instead of the usual drab, low-contrast colors at other fern fossil sites. The color is entirely natural and unique to this site.

These are among the types plants that compressed into coal over time. This collection of 3 plates is especially interesting in that two of the plates on the front side are matched pairs, as are two of the plates on the back (though different pairs). If you think a minute you will realize how this can be. Furthermore, the matched pairs on the reverse side include a seed, which is fairly rare, and reflects the fact that these ferns reproduced via seeds rather than spores as modern ferns.

This would make a wonderful addition to any fossil collection and a unique gift for any science and nature lover. Low starting bid and no reserve. Buyer to pay $5.75 for Priority Mail shipping anywhere in the contiguous United States. Payment by PayPal please. Thanks!
